        有無水物、六水物和七水物三種。商品多為六水物，有α-型和β-型兩種變體，前者為藍色四方結晶，后者為綠色單斜結晶。加熱至103°C時失去六個結晶水。易溶于水，微溶于乙醇、甲醇，其水溶液呈酸性，微溶于酸、氨水，有毒。主要用于電鍍工業，是電鍍鎳和化學鎳的主要鎳鹽，也是金屬鎳離子的來源，能在電鍍過程中，離解鎳離子和硫酸根離子。
